12:46 pm: Birds

White-tailed tropicbirds. These are pelagic birds, having as little to do with land as possible (digression: I'm fascinated by the sort of creatures that live in the ocean and can go through life without ever touching a solid surface, living on things that have fallen from above, letting their own detritus fall lower down. Open-ocean fish which live near the surface are incredibly curious about floating things, to the extent that leaving something floating is used as a fishing method. In fact, this is one way of catching dolphin-friendly tuna and it is not a good idea. End digression.)

I think this is a Fairy or White Tern.

I think this is a Bald Eagle. Location: above Anchorage Train Station car park. There were gulls swooping round it from the nearby river (Ship Creek: enunciation minefield!). It looked like the gulls were trying to get it to go away without killing anything. Eventually it flew off over the local air base, so I suppose they were successful.

Wow, yay for Lynnette! I have been to Anchorage train station car park but there weren't any bald eagles there at the time. They must be a more recent addition. :-)

Yay, bald eagles are very mobile.

Did you go on the train? I didn't but got to wait a very long time in a bus at the tunnel to Whittier for the train to go past. It is a very slow train.

I did go on the Alaska railroad. It was fab.

Yay I went to Alaska at the end of my gap year before university with my parents - my dad was working for BP out there so my mum and I tagged along. We stayed in the Sheraton hotel (paid for by the company). We went on a float plane trip flying above glaciers and two boat trips to see glaciers and wildlife. It was my first time (and only!) time in the US.

You are very lucky to go and see many places. You must carry on taking many photos. Yay for sweet and wonderful Lynnette.
