12:09 pm: The Dinosaurs of Night
This one brought to you by the melancholy deaths of Chang and Eng Bunker, the sort of dinosaur book which proclaims "Brontosauruses had two brains"[1], and the notion that if you were to permit time travel to the past only for purposes that didn't dick around with the timeline too much, dinosaur hunting in the late Cretaceous might get a look-in. Just don't step on the rodents.

[1] The Internet informs me that
a) 'Brontosaurus' is an outmoded classification, and I probably meant 'Apatosaurus', and
b) It wasn't the Brontosaurus that was thought to have two brains anyway, it was the Stegosaurus, and
c) The two brains theory has been thoroughly disproved anyway.
But apart from that, all good, eh?

And in a clear case of telepathy, in my insomnia-powered mind-wanderings late last night, I was also thinking about the dinosaur two brain theory and wondering HOW WOULD WE KNOW? I mean, all we've got are the bones. And then thought how fab it'd be to have two brains, as they could take turns resting and you could be asleep and awake at the same time - all the time. Except when both brains had insomnia, which would be even worse.

Given that (as the same sort of dinosaur books were fond of saying), a dinosaur's brain is the size of a walnut, and dinosaurs are quite large, I guess you could hide brains all over the place and the difference would be hard to tell. Although apparently (sez wikipedia) the space where they thought the second brain was was twenty times the size of the first brain. Which is a bit "eek, I have an evil mastermind living in my bottom".

Also ISTR there are some animals (fish? sharks? something of that sort) which only sleep with half the brain at one time, so that they can carry on swimming. But possibly in circles.

This applies rather well to couples where one partner has ME or a sleep disorder...

Alas!

The brain at each end certainly explains the theory that they were thick in the middle.
